The brand, which was initially a physical business, has only been available online since The Hut Group acquired it from administration in 2009. On London's Oxford Street, Richard Branson opened his first Virgin store in 1971. The first Megastore followed in 1979. Through expansion in the 1980s and 1990s, the franchise expanded internationally. The Virgin Group sold the majority of its Virgin Megastores between the early and mid-2000s to a number of businesses, including the American stores to The Related Companies and the French outlets to the Lagardere Group.
